Family times

Over the years, Darl and Mad welcomed us and eventually our growing family to their home in Ottawa and to their cottage on the St. Lawrence many times. Some summers were spent there enjoying the fishing, the excursions to local landmarks, a trip for the boys to a Expo baseball game, and at the end of the day a delicious meal prepared by Madeleine! Sometimes the Laporte clan were known to congregate around the kitchen table for a poker game! We were often also greeted warmly by Mads sister Yvette and Roger Forgues and their children who had the cottage next door at Westleys Point. Other Massie siblings visited from time to time as well joining the gathering and becoming good friends of ours as well. So many good times centered there! I personally enjoyed the afternoons spent shopping with Mad, often with Yvette or others joining us. Mad always had beautiful clothes but I still smile at a comment she often made to me. She referred to me as tall, implying that I had a easier time finding suitable clothes! I was 53, not exactly what most people would classify as tall! Madeleine suffered a profound tragedy in her life with the death of her son Robert. I know how hard she struggled to come to terms with that loss. Her strong religious faith offered comfort but what a toll that must have taken on her. How she continued on in her life after that is a true testament to her personal strength. Losing Darl prematurely was another huge loss for her and I know her family was a great source of support for her. In spite of the tragedies, Madeleine had a full and rich life, enjoying her large family, the many nieces and nephews who came along, and the many friends who enjoyed her and Darls hospitality She will be missed.
