Obituary

Passed away peacefully at the Glengarry Memorial Hospital on Monday, February 22, 2021. Tina Ellen Cairncross of Glen Roy; age 73 years. Beloved partner of Edwina Billyk. Loving sister of Judy Butts (late Bob) of Victoria, B.C., and Scott Cairncross (Mary) of Milton Ontario. Cherished aunt of Christopher Cairncross (Shona) of Guelph, Bret Kelly of Toronto and Tiffany O’Leary (Dan) of Ottawa. Dear daughter of the late John Duncan and Florence Isabelle Cairncross (nee Timmins). Tina loved her thirty year teaching career at Glengarry District High School, her life was full, she was busy, she was in her element. In retirement she remained active with the best group of friends one could ever hope to have. They golfed, kayaked, camped, hiked, snow shoed, skied, sang, and had many good times and laughs. The support she received through her cancer journey was unparalleled, from drivers to soup sisters and the huge moral support. At Tina's request cremation has taken place and a celebration of life will take place at a later date. Arrangements are under the care and direction of the Munro & Morris Funeral Homes Ltd., 114 Main St. South, Alexandria (613-525-2772). As expressions of sympathy Memorial Donations to the Friends of the Glengarry Trails would be appreciated by the family.

I was first “aware” of Tina when we were both students at St. Pat’s College in 1967. She was hard to miss. But my first REAL introduction to her was when she hosted my surprise 21st Birthday party at her home on Lyon Street. It could not have been MORE of a surprise for either of us, given we barely knew each other. Tina had, without hesitation, agreed to a last moment emergency request from my friend Marion. But she was unfazed! Welcoming! We were fast friends (“Besties”) forever after, even though we spent most of our lives at what seemed to be opposite ends of this vast country.
Tina’s spontaneity, resourcefulness, clever sense of humour and undaunted sense of adventure and fun drew me to her like a magnet! I see the same magnetism at work when I meet her many friends in Glengarry County.
My best example: following University Graduation, we travelled to the United Kingdom on a budget of $5 per day. This meant hitchhiking, staying in youth hostels and a steady diet of bread, cheese and wine. Sleeping accommodation included whatever was available - a barn floor in rural Ireland for one night (with hesitant permission of the Irish family who opened their door to us at midnight), bunk beds in the back of a lorry for at least two others (with permission of the Welsh lorry driver), open beach for another (in the company of a kilted Scottish veterinary student who played his bagpipes for us as he walked the beach at sunset), and several nights more on the floor of a remodeled ambulance (with permission of the Aussie nurses who were touring the backroads of Scotland). All to say, I will never have a shortage of wonderful memories of my adventures with Tina.
Tina’s leadership and positive influence as a teacher and active member of her community were admiringly watched by me from afar through the years. I heard it in the many accolades she received when inducted into the Glengarry Sports Hall of Fame and in the comments left on this website by her many students and friends. And I saw it first-hand whenever I visited.
Edwina, I share your loss. Tina was a wonderful friend. I loved her dearly, miss her terribly and will never forget her.

My memories of Tina go back many years to St. Patrick’s College. She had many friends and loved a good party. I remember Tina as a person who loved to laugh and who lived life to the fullest. I wish her family my deepest condolences.

It only seems fitting to plant a tree for the person who loved nature so much. I will always remember our trips to your place for a shoe.
