It is with tremendous sadness, but in celebration of a life well lived, that the Family of Thérèse (Méthot) Charlebois announces her peaceful passing on March 16th at the age of 94, at the Valley Garden Retirement Centre in Green Valley, Ontario.
She was the beloved wife of Mathieu Charlebois for 70 loving years.
Born in St-Bernardin, she married and moved to McCrimmon’s Corner to their farm from which they retired to Alexandria in 1979.
Much loved mother of Gilles (Michelle Paiement), Joanne (Michael Crawford), Sylvie, et Daniel (Janis Freeman).
Cherished grandmother of Julie Marie Downes (Dave Delugt), Patrick Downes, David (Taylor Sawadsky) Downes, Luke Charlebois (Clare Goodspeed), Rachael Charlebois (Kieran O’Kelly), and David Turgeon (Adrienne Isherwood).
Predeceased by her parents Joseph and Mélina Méthot and her sisters Yvonne and Stella, and brother Émile (Fernande Gratton - deceased).
Much loved sister of Sophie (Émile Levac- deceased), Marguerite (André Lalonde- deceased), Liliane (Vincent Levac), Andréa Dubois), Marie-Reine (Paul Brown).
She is also survived by her sisters-in-law Réjeanne Charlebois (Bernard Lamoureux - deceased), Estelle Denis (Roger Charlebois - deceased), and Marie-Jeanne Levac (Jean-Paul Charlebois - deceased) as well as by her brothers-in-law Germain Charlebois (Lucy Rhodenizer), Richard Charlebois (Rollande Séguin), and André Leroux (Stella Méthot - deceased).
Survived by many nieces, nephews, and friends.
A special Thank You to the staff of the Green Valley Retirement Centre for their compassionate care especially during this tragic pandemic.

In memoriam donations to the Glengarry Memorial Hospital Foundation would be appreciated by the family. As a Memorial to Thérèse a tree will be planted in a memory woods. A tree grows-memories live.

Thérèse lived an intentioned and authentic life. She loved unconditionally with all her heart and soul. Her family, immediate and extended, was everything to her. She may have been small in stature, but her spirit was larger than life! Thérèse derived great pleasure and satisfaction from working with her strong, soft, and caring beautiful hands. She planted and tended a large vegetable garden in order to feed her family fresh wholesome foods. With Fall’s garden bounty, Thérèse tirelessly canned enough ketchup, pickles, relish, and tomatoes to last the whole year long. She and Mathieu brought this love of the land with them to the Valley Garden Residence by planting the farrowed garden beds when they first moved in.

The image of Thérèse sitting at her sewing machine working on many different projects remains a vivid one: making clothing for the family, piecing together quilts, and repairing threadbare farm work pants. After the sale of their farm, she and Mathieu moved to Alexandria. Thérèse then had more time on her hands and turned to creating crafts of all kinds including ceramics. Our family was gifted many of mom's creations. These treasures will forever be part of her legacy.

Thérèse also generously gave her time by volunteering for various organizations. Le Club d’Age D’Or d’Alexandria and Le Cercle des Fermières benefited from her commitment and in return provided her with a strong community of friends.

Perhaps one of Thérèse’s greatest accomplishments was learning to drive at the age of 65. She had always resisted due to her fear and anxiety of getting behind the wheel of a car. Spurred on by feeling stranded and isolated when Mathieu was hospitalized, she bravely signed up for driving lessons and through her sheer determination and courage succeeded in getting her driver’s license. She went on to drive for another 20 years.
