Obituary for Sherrill Trottier (Ferguson)
Sherrill Mae Trottier (nee Ferguson) of Dunvegan, died peacefully at home on Wednesday, March 11, 2020 with her family by her side in her 79th year. Sherrill is survived by her husband of 56 years, Rene Trottier, and by her children, Lori (Earl) MacMaster, of Laggan, Kelli (Don Dawson) of Kingston and Traci of Cornwall. She will be missed by her four special grandchildren, Braelyn MacMaster (Denver Bates) of Laggan, Graham MacMaster of North York, Matt and Caleb Genier of Cornwall, and her step-granddaughter, Alicia Dawson of Kingston. Sherrill is predeceased by her parents, Martin and Olive Ferguson and by her sister, Sheila Kippen.
Sherrill was born May 1, 1941 in St. Elmo, Ontario and raised in Dunvegan where her parents owned and ran the local General Store and Post Office. She attended school in the 1-room school house in Dunvegan, followed by highschool in Maxville then Alexandria where she graduated at the age of 16! Back then, she needed only one year of teacher’s college in Ottawa in order to start her teaching career in Ottawa. She taught for four years and never returned after starting her family. She and Rene began their married life in Stittsville for close to ten years, before returning to their roots in Glengarry. They bought land and built their split level home on Dunvegan road, in the summer of 1973, and have happily remained there ever since.
Sherrill was a doting wife and dedicated mother, taking their three girls to fiddle, stepdance, guitar, piano and swimming lessons for years and to countless stepdance and fiddle competitions throughout Eastern Ontario and Western Quebec. She was also a very dedicated soccer mom and grandma for years!
Sherrill was also an accomplished piano player (Grade 8 Royal Conservatory). For years, she and her family donated their time entertaining at nursing homes, fundraisers, concerts, events of all kinds, and then in later years, she and Rene alone entertained as a duo. Sherrill was an integral part of the Glengarry Old Tyme Fiddlers Association and also enjoyed, in later years, being an active member of the Celtic Music Hall of Fame. In addition to music, Sherrill’s favourite pastimes were her many pets, reading, bird-watching, knitting and looking after Rene! She didn’t ever dip her toe in the backyard pool as she hated water, but some of her fondest memories would have been just sitting and watching her girls and their friends, and many soccer team-mates, then later her four grandchildren and friends splashing in the pool. The odd pet or cow may have done some splashing as well.
The family would like to express their thanks for the recent care Sherrill received at the Glengarry Memorial Hospital, and sincere and heartfelt thanks to Dr. Lajoie, who went above and beyond in caring for Sherrill. As per Sherrill’s wishes, there will be no service. Arrangements are under the care and direction of the Munro & Morris Funeral Homes Ltd., 114 Main St. South, Alexandria (613-525-2772).
