Obituary

Peacefully, surrounded by family, John (Sonny) McKay Petrie of Bainsville, ON passed away on January 24, 2020 at the Cornwall Community Hospital. In his 90th year he is survived by his loving wife Agnes M. Petrie (nee MacDonald) of 67 years. Sonny grew up on the family farm with a love of the land; he was a hunter and fisherman, an early conservationist, a carpenter who loved working with his hands. He was an innovator, always interested new ideas and trends, a great story teller, community minded citizen, and a good neighbour and host. Sonny enjoyed the cottage and spending time on Lake St. Francis. Lifelong resident of Curry Hill, Sonny loved his walks in the woods; it was a spiritual experience for him when he was one with nature.

Grandfather to: Alison Kalani (Amir) (Colorado), Patricia Fowler (Kyle) (Aurora) , Alexx Petrie (St. Catharines), Mackenzie and Mackayla Petrie ( Bainsville), Taylor and Nate Reynolds(Victoria).

It is with a broken heart full of sorrow that we prepare this post for our dear brother-in-law Sonny Petrie.
Our condolences go to the family, wife Aggie, sons Dale & Allan, & daughter Dawn, as we all mourn together for the loss of a great husband & father.
We begin with some of the great memories, the family gatherings we had together over the many years, be it Christmas dinners, Birthday parties, or just a grand summer dinner at their Bainsville cottage. Sonny was always the cook, & I must emphasize a great one. We would often say we’re going to Petrie’s restaurant where Sonny & Aggie always had a delicious meal and a warm welcome to everyone.
We will also remember Sonny as being a steward of the land, always trying to find a better way to till the land & harvest the crops he grew with special care & pride.
Also, we remember Sonny as being truly connected to nature, with birds and animals around him. I will always remember the many hunting & fishing trips we had together, many on his own land or on the lake right in front of his cottage.
We as parents, will never forget the kindness and caring Sonny & Aggie displayed to our two oldest daughters when they were attending university in the U.S. (while we were working out of country) to be there for the girls when needed assistance.

Sonny, may you “RIP” dear brother-in-law, as you enter into your happy hunting grounds of eternity.

To Aggie; in closing, Bernice and I want to share the sadness and grief your feeling
and help you ease the pain of losing your best friend and husband.... Sonny.

I remember Sonny as a very gentle and kind person.Pat and I met him for the 1st time in 1970 when we had the great fortune to purchase our home "Ironside Cottage" on the 2nd from him.It began the marvelous journey of 47 years of our living and raising our family at Curry Hill. All throughout our living there we were in contact with Sonny and Aggie and always enjoyed our friendship with them.I look back on those times with fondness and great memories and a significant part of those memories were our relationship with Sonny and Aggie.I wish Aggie and her children strength to help them through this time of their loss. Love, Fred
