Obituary for Hugh McKay
Hugh (Hughie) Gerald McKay of Ingleside, ON passed away on Wednesday, July 1, 2020, at the age of 81. After several months of declining health, Hugh died peacefully while in hospital.
Hugh was born in Montreal, QC in October 1938, to father Daniel McKay and mother Lillian Cochrane. He was one of eleven children in a very close and loving family.
Hugh met his wife, Patricia McCarthy, in Montreal and they married in 1962. Together they had 3 beautiful children and raised their family in and around the Montreal area for many years. During that time, Hugh worked for Bell Canada.
After 30 years of service, he retired in 1987. With the kids grown and starting families of their own, Hugh and Pat moved to Ingleside ON the following year, to enjoy their golden years on their “gentleman’s farm”.
Hugh will be remembered as a kind man with a big heart whose family meant the world to him. He was so very proud of his 3 children and 9 grandchildren…and we all know that he had no favorites there!
Hugh also had a very large extended family and they all held a special place in his heart. Hughie was a good friend to so many people, ready to give you the shirt off his back when you needed it. His wife, Patricia, passed away almost 2 years ago now and it was clear to those closest to him that he was at a loss without her.
The family is so very grateful to all of the nurses, doctors and staff at Glengarry Memorial Hospital in Alexandria, ON, where Hugh spent the last three and a half months of his life. They all took such wonderful care of him and did their best during very challenging times.
Hugh was preceded in death by his wife Patricia, his parents Daniel and Lillian, his sister Sheila and brothers Dan, Tim and Shaun. He is survived by his daughters Leslie McKay, Joann Johnson (Tim) and son Hugh Randall (Amy Chapin); his 9 grandchildren: Brandy and Katrina Sargent (Paul Goodship), Charlie, Delsie and Ella Johnson, and Hugh Riley, Kaitlyn, Dawson and McKenna McKay. He is also survived by his sisters Mary Seifred, Margaret Broden, Eileen Diggins and brothers Neil, Patrick, and D’Arcy McKay, as well as dozens of wonderful nieces and nephews.
Due to travel and gathering restrictions currently in place, the family will be waiting until 2021 to celebrate Hugh’s life.
