Obituary for Hugh Francis McDonell

Hugh Francis McDonell
Hugh Francis McDonell (Ret'd Ottawa Police Sergeant)

It is with broken hearts that the family of Hugh Francis MCDONELL announce his passing from our arms to those of our Lord in the early hours of Monday, December 31st. Born on a farm in Greenfield, Ontario on July 3rd, 1928, he married the love of his life Kathleen Masterson on July 11th, 1953. He and Kathleen (Kaye) raised five children; their beloved late daughter Beatrice Morris (Billy), Michael (Wendy Sirola), Patrick (Bev), Jamie “Red” (Mary) and Timothy. Hugh Francis loved and was loved by his community and served them as ‘the gentle cop’ for 35 years as a proud member of the Ottawa City Police. Francis and Kaye retired to the shores of Loch Garry, Glengarry County. He gave us all a lesson in leadership, courage, humility and kindness, beginning his 11 year battle with cancer in 2007. He quietly finished his fight with love for all and without complaint shortly before sunrise over the ice covered waters of Loch Garry. He was predeceased by his darling daughter Beatrice Anne, parents Hugh and Annie (Kennedy) and sister Mary. He is survived by Kathleen, his “four boys”, Mike, Pat, Red, Tim and son-in-law Billy Morris, sister Rita and brother Joseph. He will be fondly remembered by his 14 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren. You were our family’s Guiding Light, Hugh Francis and you’ll be forever missed. Relatives and friends may call at the Munro & Morris Funeral Homes Ltd., 114 Main St. South, Alexandria (613-525-2772) on Friday, January 4, 2019 from 2-4 pm and 7-9 pm and on Saturday from 9:30 am until 10:30 am. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Finnan’s Cathedral on Saturday, January 5, 2019 at 11 am. Spring Interment in the St. Catherine of Sienna Parish Cemetery, Greenfield. In lieu of flowers, Memorial donations to Our Lady's Missionaries or Hospice Cornwall would be appreciated by the family. As a Memorial to Hugh Francis a tree will be planted in a memory woods.
