With sadness we announce that Gertrude MacDonell passed away peacefully at Maxville Manor on Friday May 28th, 2021 in her 92nd year. Daughter of the late Florence (D.D.) MacDonell and Jerome (Archie Roy) MacDonell. Last of her siblings, Auntie Gert was pre-deceased by her sisters Isobel (Jim) Redmond, Alison (John James) MacPhee and brothers Alan Anthony (Patricia) MacDonell and Archibald MacDonell. She is survived by her sister-in-law Isabel MacDonell. Auntie Gert was an educator, world traveller and gifted story- teller. Gertrude started her career teaching in the classic 8-grade Ontario schoolhouse and retired from her formal teaching career at St Mary’s Catholic Elementary School in Niagara Falls. In the words of one of her colleagues “Gert’s career is marked as one of ebullience, the following of strong personal convictions, the seeking of social justice, and the dedication to her students”. Auntie Gert’s definition of short-term plans – was getting out by 3pm, and long term plans getting out in June in one piece. In the summer season she worked with University Tours as a guide that led her on many adventures and unique experiences across Canada and around the world. Ever the teacher, travellers who were on her tours were guaranteed to learn and to have many laughs -If they never tasted a Manhattan cocktail, they were sure to have had the experience on her tours. She loved spending time with her relatives and imparting her wisdom with everyone she met. As family, we knew that if we wanted an honest opinion, we would brace ourselves and ask Auntie Gert. Her family and friends will be left with memories of her adventures and bevvy of humourous quips and jingles. Beneath her frank and sometimes tough demeanor was a clannish and warm heart. The family would like to extend our gratitude to the Maxville Manor team who cared and supported Auntie Gert during her time there. Special note of thanks to David, one of her chosen support workers. Her day always was better when David and his sense of humour was around. Due to the present restrictions, a private visitation will be held at the Munro & Morris Funeral Homes Ltd., 46 Oak St. Lancaster (613-347-3629) followed by a private Mass of Christian Burial in St. Mary's Catholic Church Williamstown. Interment will follow in the Parish Cemetery.
