Obituary for George Baker

It is with deep sadness that we announce that George E.M. Baker of Bainsville, age 86 years, passed away at Hospice Cornwall on Friday, April 23, 2021. Beloved husband of the late Marilyn Baker (nee Button). Loving father of Simon (Elena), Karen (James), Cathryn (André), Greg (Annie) and Matthew. Cherished grandfather of David, Andrew, Ryan, Charlie, Ezekiel, and Ian. Dear brother of Frances. Predeceased by brothers Stanley and Leonard, by sisters Mabel, Patsy, and Dorothy, and by his parents Frederick and Mary Baker (nee Kline). George was a loyal husband to Marylyn and a great friend to many. Born in Shanghai, he survived WWII in the Japanese internment camp Santo Tomas in Manila. Earning a scholarship that led him to a BSC from the prestigious Imperial College in London, he went on to be one of only four people who were unofficially Canada’s space program and he continued a successful and rewarding career in aviation. George resided in the Creg Quay Community with his wife Marylyn (deceased) where they both found friends new and old in their retirement years. An active volunteer in the community, he was a big part of the Ontario Senior Games as well as the Quilt of Belonging. A Member and organiser of the local tennis club he was an avid player who enjoyed the competition and camaraderie of the game. A private Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Lancaster. Interment will follow in the Parish Cemetery. Celebration of life will follow at a later date, due to Covid 19 restrictions. Funeral arrangements are under the care and direction of Munro & Morris Funeral Homes Ltd., 46 Oak St. Lancaster (613-347-3629). As expressions of sympathy Memorial Donations to the Ottawa Regional Cancer Foundation would be appreciated by the family. As a Memorial to George a tree will be planted in a Memory Woods.
