Calvary Baptist Church Stories

We have special memories of Elsie while she was at our church, Calvary Baptist, in Ottawa in the early 1990s. I arrived as Pastor at this church in 1990, and found Elsie to be much involved in a seniors' "Keenagers" group which the previous pastor had organized. This previous pastor, Thorold Marsaw, had been a Brigadier in the Canadian Armed Forces. Because of Elsie's participation in the Armed Forces in WWII, Elsie thrived under his ministry. Pastor Marsaw saw the Church as an army moving forward, and Elsie was a loyal and active soldier. So when I arrived at Calvary Baptist, I inherited her willing spirit and desire to serve, which I much appreciated. How surprised we were one day when Elsie brought a special man to introduce to us. I'm not sure where she met Harvey Reid. Possibly it was through the Legion, of which she was a member, because Harvey was a retired military dentist. One could easily see the relationship growing. As the year 1992 came to a close, they expressed their desire to be married. They wanted their wedding day to be February 14; but this date fell on a Sunday in 1993. Was it possible to get married on a Sunday? Certainly, I said. Then the next question was - could they get married immediately after the worship service while the congregation was still present? Certainly, I said. So on that special day, with a full auditorium consisting of many family members and the congregants of the church, we celebrated a wedding in a most unique fashion. Together, Elsie and Harvey participated faithfully in the functioning of the church. Harvey became one of our Deacons (a special Leader/Elder) in Calvary Baptist, and with Elsie, continued to actively participate. They even studied the Bible intensively at home together, reading passages and thinking deeply about them. For many weeks in 1996 they lead a Wednesday prayer meeting at the church, sharing the results of their studies. Harvey was a real gentleman, and treated Elsie with great respect. One dark, rainy evening, Harvey rushed out of the church to bring the car closer to the door so Elsie would not get wet. Accidentally Harvey dropped his car keys; they fell down between the step and wall of the building, and even down into a groundhog hole under the step. (The retrieval is another story!) But Elsie, in her easy going manner, was not disturbed, but laughed and laughed, even for months to come. I might add other thoughts another time. But what Elsie would want me to say above all else is that she loved the Lord with all her heart. She had accepted Jesus Christ as her Saviour, recognizing that she was a sinner and not deserving of God's love, and life in heaven with Him for all eternity. But she confessed her sin, asked God to transfer them to Jesus who died on the cross as punishment for her sins, and committed her life to following the Lord. She would ask us all to commit our lives to Christ in the same way as well, following Jesus wherever He might lead. Elsie would affirm without doubt that it was Jesus Christ in her life that made all the difference, and showered her with multiple blessings. (With gratefulness, Pastor Robert McRoberts)
