Obituary for Edmond Allaire

It is with heavy hearts that we share the sad news that Joseph Edmond (Eddy) Allaire passed away at the Glengarry Memorial Hospital on Saturday February 11th 2023. Resident of Green Valley; formerly of Cornwall and Pilon’s Point, Summerstown. He was 95 years old.

Edmond is survived by his loving wife and life partner, Mariette Allaire (née Ayotte), with whom he shared 72 years of marriage filled with amazing adventures. Loving father to five children; eldest son Paul (Suzanne Gilbert), Michel (Charlene Capps), Linda Allaire Campeau (Jean-Denis), Johanne Allaire (Wade Knight), and Daniel (Linda Boisvenue-Allaire). Blessed with six wonderful grand-children: Lissa Allaire (David Larochelle), Ryan Allaire (Lindsay LeGault), Denis ‘Archie’ Allaire (Shelley Poirier), Jean-Yves Campeau (Swetha Knaik), Danielle (Campeau) Dumoulin (Danick) and Marlena Allaire-Van Oers (Nick). He was also very proud of his 13 great-grandchildren.

Edmond was born to Albert Allaire and Imelda Léger in Cornwall on July 2, 1927. He is predeceased by his parents, his twin brother Raymond (late Jeannette), and his dear brothers: Léodore, Fernand (late Jeannine) and infant Raymond.

Edmond was born and raised in the City of Cornwall, where he thrived from mechanic apprentice to a well-respected business owner of Allaire BP Service Station. He served the community for over 50 years, whereby you would often see him driving his Tow-Truck around Cornwall and helping anyone in need. The garage was first purchased as Supertest with his late business partner Rhéal Pilon, then emerged Allaire & Pilon’s Service Station, and then finally Allaire BP Service Station until 1982.

Eddy loved to fish and share stories about the big one that got away. At 8:00 am, the one that got away weighed 2 pounds, and by 5:00 pm and a few cocktails later the same fish weighed 10 pounds, and the fishing rod was bent in half. He was a master at catching, cleaning and serving up perch rolls, so we certainly didn’t complain of his far-fetched stories. Eddy also loved hunting with his elder sons Paul and Mike, and like-minded friends. For many years he travelled to Northern Ontario to hunt for moose.

Eddy was a proud member of the Knights of Columbus, and one of his notable achievements was being awarded Knight of the Year. In addition, he was a Fourth Degree Knight, the highest degree of the order. Eddy spent many evenings playing pool and sharing in a few beverages, but more significantly, he did a lot of volunteering for the organization.

As a member of the Lion’s Club, Eddy was known for constructing and participating in the many bathtub derby races and festivals. In addition, he participated in many of the Lion’s Club festivals and parades, raising awareness for the youth out-reach program.

Eddy loved to cook, especially apple pies. You could always tell when he cooked the meal, because he would repeat… “It's good eh! It’s good eh!” Yes Dad, it’s good. “I know, I made it! Have some more!”

One of Eddy’s biggest passions was singing, especially “chanson à répondre”. He loved to entertain with the harmonica, piano, and the spoons! Sing, tap and clap along... he loved an audience! Eddy and his twin Raymond, would sing many Christmas songs at St. Martyrs Catholic Church, and participated in choirs.

You could always find Eddy walking around with either a Harmonica or toothpick in his mouth. Undoubtedly a big contributor to his dental hygiene and leaving this world with all his original teeth.

Edmond demonstrated incredible courage during the last weeks of his journey here on Earth. He gifted us with a calm and loving demeanour, showing great strength and humour. You can still hear him sing and play his favorite instrument, until he decided to say goodbye.

Arrangements are under the care and direction of the Munro & Morris Funeral Homes Ltd., 114 Main St. South, Alexandria (613-525-2772). Cremation has taken place. A Private Memorial Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated in Ste Marie de l’Assomption, Green Valley. Burial to follow in Nativity Cemetery, Cornwall.

Please celebrate Edmond’s life by living and singing with full expression, as he did. In lieu of flowers, Memorial Donations to the charity of your choice would be appreciated by the family.

As a Memorial to Edmond a tree will be planted in a memory woods. A tree grows-memories live.
