People remember Don as always having a joke and a smile. He grew up in the North of England and lived with his father, who owned a sweet shop in Earby. Don enjoyed music and played the clarinet and tenor saxophone in bands. Don and Ida were married on April 5, 1952 and then emigrated to Canada in 1954. His profession was that of an Electrical Engineer. They were one of many British families who came over and worked at Rolls Royce (aerospace). Even though they weren’t related, these people became one big family in Canada.
Don and Ida enjoyed vacations back to England, to the seaside in Maine and spent about 30 years of winters in Florida. Don and Ida were always envied when they floated around a dance floor. With music in his blood, it made dancing look effortless. Don also enjoyed playing golf. He was fortunate enough to play at courses in Scotland, England, Florida as well as at home.
Don and their daughter, Hilary, learned to ride horses together and that grew into such a passion, that Don and Ida bought a farm in Dalkeith to have horses and horse activities at home. Don was also a senior member of the Lake of Two Mountains Hunt club for many years. His horse, Stanley, was a great horse for the hunt. Stanley was half draft and had quite wide and solid hind quarters. Anyone who had trouble holding back their horse would fight for the position behind Don and Stanley, so they could use his but to run into to, to stop their horse.
As most people, Don enjoyed food. He also was quite a cook. Famous for his roast prime rib, it was enjoyed on many occasions, including holidays, birthdays, and hunt breakfasts. Also a favorite, was going to Chenoys’ Deli for smoked meat or Chinese Food restaurants.
Having played ‘football’ in his youth, Don liked to go and watch his two grandchildren, Paul and Jenni Nixon, playing soccer in the local leagues. He also helped out taking them to local fairs for various activities, learning to play music and dancing. He also chaperoned them on the hunt. It was quite a site to see ‘Pops’ up on Stanley and the 9 or 10 year old kids on their ponies. Don was very hand-eye coordinated and good at playing games like croquet and billiards. He always challenged the kids with these games.
In the last 10 years, Don became afflicted with dementia. So over time, his abilities and activities had diminished. In the beginning of 2020, Don and Ida were still keeping busy going to Day Away programs and activities at the Seaway Seniors club in Cornwall. Then the Covid-19virus hit the country, and It took away all their social programs. Don contracted the virus about the 23rd of February, 2021. He went to the hospital on February 28 because he fell and hit his head. The hospital tested him for Covid and it came back positive. He ended up with pneumonia from the virus and a bacterial pneumonia as well.
Donald Beaty, aka ‘Pops’, will be sorely missed. I can see him and Stanley jumping clouds in the sky. God Bless, Pops, we all love you.
