Obituary for Dane Lanken

On March 3, 2023 at Hospice Cornwall, surrounded by his loving family. He leaves to mourn his wife Anna (McGarrigle), his son Sylvan (Vanessa Bonneau) and daughter Lily, his brother Peter, cousin Ingrid (Lamoureux) Odell, his most cherished grand-daughter Fera, sister-in-law Jane McGarrigle, nieces Anna Dow (Robert McMillan) and Martha Wainwright (Nicolas Deslis), nephews Vinnie Dow (Kathleen Weldon) and Rufus Wainwright (Jörn Weisbrodt). Dane was born in Montreal in 1945 and raised on the flower farm of his Danish-born parents Uffe and Gudda (Sorensen) Lanken in old Cote St. Luc. When their 25 acre property was expropriated in the late 50s for the expansion of Cote St Luc, the family moved to Montreal West where Dane attended Montreal West High School. He was at McGill University for two years before going to work at the Montreal Gazette in the Entertainment Dept. His boss and mentor was classical music critic Jacob Siskind. Dane wrote mainly movie reviews and rock and folk music critiques in this famously significant time for the arts, 1967 - 1977. He covered icons Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Junior Walker & the Allstars, Robert Charlebois, and films Mon oncle Antoine and Star Wars among others. In the meantime, perhaps mourning the loss of their former farm, Dane and his father acquired a large property in historic Glengarry County and it was there that Dane and his young family moved to in 1982. Dane was a longtime contributing editor and feature writer for the Canadian Geographic magazine. A serious student of the past, he loved the rich history of the old Scottish county where he now lived and served as president of the Glengarry Historical Society for eight years. He sat on countless committees that promoted and preserved local historic properties that included the Pioneer Museum in Dunvegan, St Raphael’s Ruins, the Glengarry Archives, the Alexandria Grotto, and more recently the Glengarry Fencibles Trust that acquired the Bishops’ House in St Raphael’s. Dane played the trumpet and loved to sing bass, something he often did with his wife Anna and her sister Kate McGarrigle early on in their music careers. Dane taught Journalism and Film Studies courses at St Lawrence College in Cornwall, Ontario for several years. He wrote Montreal Movie Palaces, a history of Montreal’s old cinemas, in 1993 and Kate and Anna McGarrigle, Songs and Stories, in 2007. He was the recipient of a Heritage Canada award in 1976, the Lieutenant-Governor’s Ontario Heritage award in 2012 and the North Glengarry Lifetime Achievement award in 2019. Dane was a warm and charming man and he is very much missed by his family and his many friends. Sincere thanks to the nurses from Bayshore, Hospice Cornwall and Dr. D. Poilly. Donations in his memory can be made to the Glengarry Fencibles Trust or to Hospice Cornwall. There will be a celebration of his life later in the Spring. Thank you.
