Condolence: I am very saddened to hear of Mr. Provost's passing. In his own way, he lived for the community. May he rest in peace. My prayers are with you.

Condolence: Seems like yesterday. That autumn morning, driving into town with Rene Lalonde and my Father for the first time, I was three years old and about to get my first kite. The sun cresting the treetops from the east, the thicket of leaves dancing away from the tires as we wound that fateful corner and came to a stop before a scene, to me, like something out of a wild west film. Clomping up the stairs excited, the hollow excitement of my feet on the wood flooring, as I pushed through the doors and ran to the back of the store to be greeted by the most gentle soul to grace the hills of Stormont. A warm smile upon his face and an acknowledgement from my father in stern form to draw respect to the moment, an apology for my excitement as it was explained I was embarking upon my destiny with science. I thought it was simply a kite. But alas, Claude soon resounded with me the importance of my purchase and with it, lent me a history lesson I would never forget. Yup, I learned about electricity at the age of three from a corner store Clerk. Little did I know he was oh so much more than a simple Clerk and a Clerk held more than a simple role, he was the town therapist, theologian, historian, teacher and even make shift doctor / veterinarian at times. Over the years, each visit grew further apart and each visit grew longer as it became near impossible to say goodbye to our friend. Every visit held a moment of escape, his rickety door the gateway to a never ending story. Side note, I always imagined he held the book from the film in his attic. There was something magical about Provost's for everyone. Even if you left the store empty handed. Your heart was always topped off. Selflessly, by a man who cared more sincerely about what took place in our lives than quite often we ourselves did and for that, I know he will be greatly missed, for its rare to come across a soul who can resound with us the importance and necessity of the smaller things in life and how often we take them for granted. Claude, I never took our visits for granted and pray you are to be Celebrated. My condolences to the family, the community and all those whom were blessed enough to share in his story, his legacy, his life. Godspeed

Condolence: My condolences and sympathy to Claude and his family. I first met Claude in 1993 as a new ad consultant with The Glengarry News. Claude of course, knew who my wife's relatives were and quickly filled me in on the history of Moose Creek. His store was similar to my Grandfathers' and it was great to share our love of history. Claudes' favourite airplane was the DeHaviland Tiger Moth and he gave me many books over the years to read about it and other war related interests. He always was humble about his war service but did share that he had come close to getting hit by a German bullet days after he landed. I always watched with amazement as Claude and Heather helped their customers and knew their orders by heart. As said in other posts, you don't see that kind of service today. I last saw Claude about over a year ago and he still remembered me from all those years ago. I consider myself fortunate to have met him.

Condolence: Our Deepest Sympathies to the Family and Friends of Uncle Claude. We had the privilege of having Claude as a Step-Uncle and Cousin. For we were related on both sides of my Family. A lot of my Favourite Memories of Moose Creek included Grandpa’s Provost Store, the House filled with relatives, the Church. I was always “helping” in the Store when I could! A lot of great stories were told by Claude. He was a fountain of information, and loved to share all kinds of History. He will surely missed by all who knew him. R.I.P. Claude, from the Leroux’s-Jackie (Claude), Donald/Donna, Joanne/David, and Robert/Joanne .

Condolence: “Moose Creek Resident of the Century” would be an apt title awarded to Mr. Claude Provost. He was such a remarkable village friend, neighbour, shopkeeper, sleuth, comedian, historian, conversationalist, sage, and veteran. I left every visit I made to him confident that I would see him again – though he did not, with humour, admit the same confidence. Gratefully, I saw Claude this past August and, sadly, I will feel the emptiness when I return to Moose Creek knowing that he is gone. Farewell, Claude, and thank you for being remarkable.

Condolence: One of my earliest childhood memories is having the privilege of Claude allowing me to choose a chocolate bar from the curved-glass and wood cabinet at the front of the store, along that massive original store counter.

Claude was always there, as was the history of his family's general store. The feeling that time stood still, but that no time had passed since the last time I visited the traditional retail space, was always comforting. Comforting, too, was the fact that Claude’s store and his home were filled with the memories of his family and community. These memories continued to live through Claude's sharing of his history, of his wartime stories and recollections of his brothers and family and their collective history, and that of the village, so proudly displayed in his gallery. The past was preserved in the general store, but Claude, who had an eye for beauty in his gallery and appreciation for sensible progress in his business, kept in the present as well, always keeping up with cash register technology, and knowing all the goings-on in the community.

Claude’s friendly demeanour, willingess to chat, charitable gestures to the community, and his connection to family members already lost will be sorely missed. But, we all know Claude, his family and old friends are all enjoying good times somewhere, reminiscing about the good old days.

On behalf of my mother, Sheila Doré, myself, and Sean, and I am sure the rest of our family who knew Claude, we extend our sympathies to the family and to all in Moose Creek.

Condolence: In a former life, I delivered bread, milk and newspapers to the Provost store. Claude was always there, smiling, joking and telling stories. Got to know him better after we moved back to Moose Creek in 2014. He told stories about days gone by, about people that he hadn't seen for years who had just dropped in to say hi. He was always humble about the accolades he received from the Cameron Highlanders and the other organizations who looked him up. The epitome of an all around nice man. We have lost a great one. Rest in peace mon ami.
