Obituary for Catherine Aitken (Clark)

Catherine Elizabeth (née Clark) Aitken was called home by her Lord on Tuesday, January 3rd, 2023 at the age of 87. Cherished wife of 67 years to the late William Allan Aitken. Beloved mother of Robert Aitken (Paulie), Lindy Aitken (Jean), John, and Muriel. Much loved aunt of Wayne McNaughton (Jean). Also fondly remembered by several grandchildren, great grandchildren, nephews, nieces, and cousins. Predeceased by her parents Linden and Susan (née McLennan) Clark. Treasured as a loving sister to the late Jean (née MacRae) Brett (late “Bob”). Faithful friend and sister-in-law of the late Shirley (née Ferguson) Aitken (Herbert). Adored niece of the late Donald (Jennie) McLennan, the late Clifford Clark (Margaret), the late Winnifred (née Clark) MacRae (Duncan), and the late Muriel Clark. Dearest cousin of Gordy MacRae (Gail) and the late Isabel and Helen McRae.
Catherine spent her life on her cherished ancestral farm on Glen Falloch Road. The sixth generation of her clan, she relished in every spring calf, kitten, pup, kid, and chick. She lived her life according to the seasons, as farmers do, with the love of the land and the dwellings built by the hands of those who had gone before her. She wanted for nothing if she could walk the fields, feed the animals, pick the apples in the orchard her grandfather had planted, and bake the most sumptuous pies and cakes one could dream of. In her later years when her mobility was limited, she delighted in the many hummingbirds that visited the feeder in front of her seat at the kitchen window and noted every bud and bloom around.
A shy child and woman by nature, she always had a twinkle in her eye, a tremendous sense of humour, a resounding and ready chortle, and a heart of pure gold. She was the consummate journaler who steadfastly recorded life on the farm in the utmost detail. Famous within the family for handwriting as many as 168 eight-page Christmas letters annually to relatives far and wide with tales of the farm; an endeavour she began each October. She was the historian and genealogist of the family with a razor-sharp mind and ability to recall the dates of births, weddings, and deaths of not only relatives but neighbours up to three generations before her and two after her.
She spoke little, but every word was said with thought and compassion. She touched the lives of all who knew her with her loyalty, kindness, and child-like whimsy. She left the world a far better place.
